Abstract
Automation of Rock Fragmentation Analysis
Measurement of rock fragmentation has evolved from a completely subjective and manual process to a statistically objective and semi-automated process. However, ultimately, the vision is to achieve a statistically representative and fully-automated process. From the blast optimization perspective, it is critical to receive reliable rock fragmentation results quickly to incorporate into the planning of subsequent blasts. Since manual rock fragmentation measurement methods tend to be time consuming, a fully-automated method is the practical way to meet these requirements.
This paper reviews the history and development of rock fragmentation measurement. Particular focus is put on the attempts of developing fully-automated systems. The limitations that were encountered, and the innovations that eliminated them, are studied to identify the course of technological advancement. This leads to a discussion on the current state of technology, and the current requirements of a fully-automated rock fragmentation measurement system envisioned by the industry today.
A number of challenges need to be addressed to realize a fully-automated rock fragmentation measurement system. As many modern methods rely on image processing, progress needs to be made in minimizing the weaknesses and eliminating the sources of errors of image-based rock fragmentation measurement systems. There are also challenges in ensuring that the rock sizes statistically represent the sizes in the physical world. This includes the ability to validate the rock fragmentation results, and the ability to quantify the degree of accuracy for comparisons.
A fully-automated rock fragmentation measurement system concept is described based on the presented requirements. Three major components of the system including automatic image acquisition with scale and other information, automatic processing of the images, and automatic reporting, are discussed in terms of technical challenges and potential solutions.
