This September, Motion Metrics’ Marketing Manager, Jodie Davies, participated in a panel discussion about Canadian innovation at the 33rd biennial Perumin Mining Convention.
Perumin is held in Arequipa, Peru and aims to disseminate new knowledge acquired through research and innovation. Spanning 10.7 hectares and attended by more than 125,000 professionals from more than 50 countries, the Perumin Mining Convention is one of the largest mining events in the world. Motion Metrics was one of more than 1600 exhibitors from 15 countries who presented their products at the conference’s mining technology fair.
This year, Canada was selected to host a three-hour session featuring talks covering a variety of subjects, from exploration and water sustainability to technology solutions and government action. Davies’ panel was led by Trade Commissioner Alexandra Laverdure, chaired by the Managing Director of the Mining Suppliers Trade Association (MSTA) Canada, Ryan McEachern, and featured representatives from three mining technology companies: Motion Metrics, Cypher Environmental, and MacLean Engineering.
During the panel, Davies explained how the Canadian ecosystem has accelerated innovation for Motion Metrics:
There are three major ways that being a Canadian-based company has helped Motion Metrics achieve international success. Motion Metrics has been fortunate to have access to valuable government funding programs like the Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP), Scientific Research and Experimental Development tax credit, and CanExport. Canada’s domestic mines are also the perfect testing ground for our solutions – Canadian mines operate under an extreme array of environmental conditions, and have helped us build our products to withstand temperatures ranging from -40°C to 40°C. We’ve also benefited from Canada’s abundance of tech talent; we proudly host all research and production at our headquarters on the University of British Columbia campus in Vancouver and rely on local suppliers for equipment.
Several mines in Peru use Motion Metrics products, including Cerro Verde, Toquepala, and Orica Peru. To read more about our solutions for the mining industry, click here.
