FragMetricsTM
A Shovel-Based Rock Fragmentation Analysis System
FragMetricsTM provides rock fragmentation from the shovel's bucket before the rocks break down from handling and processing. This is a critical advantage for evaluating blasting and effects on comminution processes. Measuring rock fragmentation from the conveyor belt after the crusher/grinder is no longer representative of the blast results and the input feed to the crusher/grinder.

FM-Logger: An Autonomous In-shovel Bucket Image Capturing System

Continuous Bucket Monitoring

The FM-Logger system continuously monitors the shovel bucket contents to select the best full bucket images with even lighting, high contrast, and minimal shadows for the rock segmentation analysis.
Flexible Data Access

The FM-Logger system stores the captured bucket images (full and empty buckets) on its removable storage device. The images can be retrieved manually or via mine mesh network.
Cross-Compatible Hardware Platform

The FM-Logger system shares the same reliable, heavy-duty hardware platform as the ToothMetricsTM and ViewMetricsTM systems. This integrated platform allows greater functionality at a fraction of the cost.

FM-Tablet: A Tablet PC for Fragmentation Analysis and Visualization of Results

Automatic Rock Segmentation Analysis

The FM-Tablet automatically performs advanced image processing algorithms to analyze the rock segmentation. The intelligent software performs the challenging process of rock segmentation automatically with minimal manual corrections.
Full-Featured User Interface

The intuitive FM-Tablet interface provides numerous features to analyze the rock segmentation results. The segmentation results can be analyzed both numerically and graphically through history and P (passing percentile) graphs. The analyzed images can also be tagged with the exact digging location provided by a third-party GPS interface.
Advanced Simulation and Visualization

The FM-Tablet software allows the rock segmentation results to be simulated on a virtual sieve. The P (passing percentile) numbers are instantaneously updated with respect to the sieve size. The software automatically detects fines and accurately accounts for them in the final result.
Automatic Report Generation

The FM-Tablet software generates a comprehensive report with a variety of important information such as the average percentage passing results in numerical and graphical form, Schumann distribution modulus and size modulus, and history of percentage passing to identify trend. The percentage passing results can also be exported in Comma Separated Values format for convenient use in other applications such as Microsoft Excel®.
What is FragMetricsTM?

FragMetricsTM is a mine optimization tool that uses advanced image processing and analysis techniques to provide rock size distribution statistics. The rock size distribution statistics are critical for blasting and shovel operation optimization.

How can you/your mine benefit from FragMetricsTM?

  • See the trends: Automatic data collection provides a stream of rock size distribution data to quantitatively monitor the mine process.
  • Optimize blasting: Correlate rock size distribution with the blast design to improve the effectiveness of subsequent blasts.
  • Improve shovel efficiency: Correlate rock size distribution with shovel output rate and efficiency to determine the rock sizes that allow for optimal flow.
  • Extend equipment lifespan: Correlate rock size distribution with equipment wear to determine the most economical rock sizes.
  • Reduce mill energy costs: Correlate rock size distribution with energy costs to minimize the energy costs of the mill process.

Why is FragMetricsTM the best solution?

Rock size distribution is usually determined via manual sieving, where a sample of rocks are categorized using a shake table with sieves of various sizes. The rocks pass through the sieves depending on their sizes. This is a labour intensive and intrusive process. Personnel must be allocated to gather rock samples and perform the sieving. The process is intrusive, as rock samples are removed from process. There is also a tendency to underestimate rock sizes due to the agitation of the shake table breaking down the rocks further.

FragMetricsTM automatically collects images and processes them to provide rock size distributions. The only personnel required is a person to collect the images from the data logger system and process them with the Tablet PC. The process is completely unintrusive as only images are collected and not rocks. Also, the rocks sizes are measured as-seen, since the data is collected without any disturbances to the material.

How does FragMetricsTM work?

FragMetricsTM consists of two components: FM-Logger and FM-Tablet. FM-Logger resides on embedded system in the shovel and automatically acquires full bucket images. FM-Tablet selects the best full bucket images and uses a cutting-edge fragmentation algorithm to delineate the rocks with minimal manual manipulation. FM-Tablet also provides the user the ability to browse the pass-through percentile results and modify the collection of full bucket images for further improvements in accuracy. An HTML report can be created and printed to document the fragmentation results. The percentage passing results can also be exported in Comma Separated Values format for those who prefer raw data. The blast engineers can then use the fragmentation results to determine the amount of explosives to use and optimize the blast geometry in the next blast for best results, while process engineers can use the input feed fragmentation to measure the effects of rock size on energy consumption, maintenance costs, and processing rate.
