ToothMetricsTM
The Camera-based Missing Tooth Detection System
ToothMetricsTM reduces production downtime and significantly improves the operation safety of the mining shovels in an open-pit mine by immediately detecting broken teeth and adapters on their buckets. Missing teeth that go undetected often jam a crusher or processing plant, costing significant downtime for the mine and causing a serious safety hazard.

Missing Tooth Detection

When the ToothMetricsTM system detects a missing tooth, an audible alarm is sounded to alert the shovel operator and a rugged LCD monitor allows visual confirmation of the missing tooth.
Accident Prevention

Removing a jammed tooth from a crusher is a very dangerous procedure and can lead to fatalities if not performed properly. Everything possible should be done to prevent broken teeth from reaching the crusher.
Increase Productivity

When a broken tooth is jammed in a crusher, the crusher can be out-of-service for hours or days at a time causing unexpected interruptions to production.
Compatible with All Shovel Types

The ToothMetricsTM system has been designed to the highest shock and vibration standards and has proven its reliability with all types of mining shovels including P&H, Bucyrus, and various hydraulic shovels.
Rugged Camera Bracket

Specially designed camera brackets are used to provide a clear view of the shovel teeth. These brackets have been proven to withstand the extreme shock and vibration found in the tough mining environment
What is ToothMetricsTM?

ToothMetricsTM is a unique product that has been developed over the last ten years by Motion Metrics. It is a rugged embedded machine vision system that monitors the condition of mining shovel/loader bucket teeth 24/7 and informs the machine operator of a possible tooth breakage incident in real time.

Our analysis based on a conservative typical scenario taken from actual reported numbers by customers, reveals that investment in ToothMetricsTM system will pay back the original investment in about 2 months. Moreover, ToothMetricsTM on average brings back more than 30 times its investment-dollars amount every year! Contact us for further information on ToothMetricsTM Cost-Benefit analysis.

How can you/your mine benefit from ToothMetricsTM?

Three main benefits of detecting missing teeth early when they happen are:

  • Saves workers' lives by eliminating the safety hazard associated with removing teeth/adaptor from crushers, etc.
  • Avoids unplanned crusher downtime (and the associated loss of production).
  • Prevents damage to the downstream equipment

Other than benefits associated with missing tooth detection, the live bucket view from ToothMetricsTM helps:

  • Validating the bucket fill-factor
  • Positioning haul trucks under the bucket
  • Lifting the trailing power cable for rope shovel/loaders (via the hi-ball)
  • Avoiding collision
  • Observing the bucket for any other damages such as missing lip shroud.

Why is ToothMetricsTM the best solution?

ToothMetricsTM is the #1 missing tooth detection system on existence. It is proven reliable in more than 25 mines around the world. Testimonials from our valued customers are the proof to say that ToothMetricsTM brings huge value and dividends to mines.

It is important to note that ToothMetricsTM is not just a physical technology product. ToothMetricsTM comes with supportive services that enable ToothMetricsTM to function properly. These include:

  • Installation by experienced personnel
  • Professional training
  • First-class customer support and technical assistance
  • 1-year free software upgrade

How does ToothMetricsTM work?

ToothMetricsTM starts by using an adaptive bucket tracking algorithm to lock onto the operating shovel/loader's bucket. The algorithm is specially designed to optimize its sensitivity to the environment over time. Once a lock has been acquired, the teeth are identified on the shovel/loader. An intelligent tooth identification algorithm is used to determine the status of the teeth. This algorithm has been statistically tuned using 200 hours of bucket video footage taken from 20 different mines around the world. If a missing tooth is identified, visual and audio notification is promptly provided to the shovel/loader operator to catch the tooth before it arrives at a crusher.

In a sense, ToothMetricsTM gives the shovel/loader an eye and a brain to avoid missing teeth incidents.
MPV100

The MPV100 Portable Viewer is a rugged LCD display device allowing to see the live camera view which is an extremely useful tool to have when adjusting and troubleshooting cameras.
MCF100

An extension arm for mounting the camera and the light for ToothMetricsTM, WearMetricsTM, and FragMetricsTM products on P&H cable shovels
MCF200

An extension platform for mounting the camera and the light source for ToothMetricsTM, WearMetricsTM, and FragMetricsTM products on Bucyrus cable shovels
MCF300

An offset platform for mounting the camera and the light source for ToothMetricsTM, WearMetricsTM, and FragMetricsTM products on various types of hydraulic shovels
