A Dangerous Problem

Shovel teeth have the potential to break off from the bucket during operation. Such an event often goes unnoticed by the operator, digging productivity declines and the missing tooth has the potential to make its way to downstream equipment causing further damage. Missing teeth entering and jamming a downstream crusher or conveyor belt is a very dangerous situation to rectify. Such an event results in significant time and cost implications.


Continuous Monitoring

ShovelMetrics™ Missing Tooth Detection features a rugged camera that overlooks the shovel bucket. Through image processing and artificial intelligence algorithms, the system detects broken or missing teeth and adapters in real-time. When this occurs, the operator is alerted through an in-cab monitor.

The monitor sends visual and audible alarms outlining which tooth is missing. In doing so, the operator knows with accuracy which truck the missing tooth is in, preventing it from reaching downstream crushers and conveyor belts.


Prevent Downtime

Retrieving a tooth from a crusher is very dangerous and requires highly experienced personnel. In addition, shovels, excavators and backhoes are commonly the first equipment in the material handling process and any changes in productivity can have a domino effect on downstream processes. By carefully monitoring these shovels, excavators and backhoes, unplanned downtime and losses in productivity can be minimized. How long is the installation process?

ShovelMetrics™ Missing Tooth Detection installation and calibration takes approximately 2 days to complete.

Does the system detect adapters as well as teeth?

Yes. ShovelMetrics™ Missing Tooth Detection monitors the teeth of the shovel bucket. However, when an adapter is missing, so is the accompanying tooth and our system will detect this.

How is the operator notified?

An in-cab monitor provides an overview of shovel teeth status and provides visual and audible alarms when a tooth is broken or missing. The display lights up in yellow when a tooth is predicted missing and red when its status is confirmed.

How is the camera mounted and does it get damaged?

The camera is mounted at the top of the shovel boom and attached with a rugged, industrial strength bracket to protect it from rocks and debris.
